Nelson County Lifts Burning Ban
Recent rainfall and a decrease in fire danger have prompted the Nelson County Commission to lift the burning ban put in place early last week.
The commission met this morning (Friday, May 18) and voted to rescind the fire emergency and burn ban issued May 7. The rescinding of the ban was implemented after consultation with the eight local fire departments in Nelson County.
Nelson County Emergency Management still urges caution when burning and reminds citizens that they are to contact the dispatch center at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center (LEC) at 701-662-5323 before doing a controlled burn. The LEC then notifies the local fire department as well as law enforcement.
Be prepared to give your name, contact number, location of controlled burn, and anticipated duration of the burn. After the burning is completed and the fire is out, again contact the LEC to inform them of the completion.
Controlled burns need to be physically manned and monitored at all times. Once the fire has been started, do not walk away until the fire is completely out. Be prepared if the fire gets out of hand. Call 9-1-1 immediately and have resources available to mitigate the effects (tractor, digger, shovels, etc.).
